Toyota do Brasil Foundation Recognized with SAE Sustainability Award

São Paulo, Brazil.

On October 2, the Brazilian branch of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE Brasil) recognized the achievements of the Toyota do Brasil Foundation (TBF) with its annual sustainability award. The award was presented to George Costa e Silva, executive director of TBF.

The award primarily recognized TBF's wide-ranging "5 Years" project. In choosing TBF, SAE Brasil took into consideration the foundation's national and local projects in the field of sustainable social responsibility.

Thanking TBF's partner organizations, employees, and related government institutions, Mr. Costa e Silva heralded the award as a "result of the confidence and strength of all who embrace our cause," and reaffirmed the organization's commitment to "investing in projects that contribute to the environment and focus on education and development of people."

National and Local Expertise

TBF has sponsored the a coral coast preservation project, the Toyota APA Costa dos Corais Project, since 2009 in partnership with the NGO SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation and the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment. The project prioritizes the conservation of coral reefs and ecosystems associated with the marine manatee in an area of 413,000 hectares in the states of Alagoas and Pernambuco. In addition, TBF has created a fund managed by SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation for the project to become self-sustaining over a period of ten years.

TBF also supports the Hyacinth Macaw Institute, which assists the protection and monitoring of a population of about 3,000 birds. With support from Toyota since 1989, the bird was dropped from the list of endangered animals, and its population in the Brazilian Pantanal jumped from 1,500 to 5,000 birds.

TBF also runs a series of socio-educational activities in cities where Toyota has facilities: Guaíba (Rio Grande do Sul State), Indaiatuba (São Paulo State), São Bernardo do Campo (São Paulo State), São Paulo (São Paulo State), Sorocaba (São Paulo State) and Porto Feliz (São Paulo State). For example, the Ambientação project uses Toyota Business Practice to identify problems and seek sustainable solutions. Among its activities are reforestation, waste management, and energy and water management. Over five years, more than 415,000 people have been trained under the project.
